situated in the Moselle department, the Bitscher Land is a protected area composed of rocks and peat bogs. It lies nestled amidst the Northern Vosges Regional Natural Park which has been recognised by the UNESCO as World Biosphere Reserve for its rich natural, historical and cultural heritage. It was also incorporated into the UNESCO%u2019s %u201CMan and Biosphere%u201D programme (MAB) whose goal it is to promote a healthy, balanced relationship between man and environment and to establish a worldwide network of model regions of sustainable development. In 1998, the Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve was the first cross-border biosphere reserve in the European Union. Its territory stretches over an area of 355 hectares and comprises 26 different sites.
