Chateau Cons-la-Grandville

sitting on a rocky promontory above the river Chiers, surrounded by wooden hills and the village of Cons-la-Grandville, the castle was built on the remains of a medieval stronghold erected by Dudon de Cons, companion to Godfrey of Bouillon on the First Crusade. From the 11th century to the present day, the castle has constantly been subjected to modifications, renovations and beautifications. The impressive structure was built in Pierre de Jaumont, a yellow limestone, and boasts different facets, rich in contrast. On the north and east end, the lower, massive building parts are reminiscent of the structure`s original military defensive nature, whereas the higher, open parts richly adorned window crosses call to mind the golden years of 18th century Renaissance. The west wing and the stables had to be rebuilt in part and, thus, are a memorial to wartime destruction, from the 17th century Thirty Years` War to the 20th century World Wars.
