situated in the east of the old town, Place Saint-Louis is one of the most remarkable public squares in Metz and a very popular tourist destination. It was erected on the remains of a Roman defensive wall. A legacy of the Lombard bankers who came to run the city´s finances in the 13th century, the houses lining the square clearly bear witness to the influence of Italian architecture: with their façades towering above the roofs, the buildings appear even more majestic. Place Saint-Louis was one of the most important market squares in Metz during the Middle Ages.
