brief description:

the casemates were built approximately five centuries ago for the protection of the medieval castle and the château of Saarbrücken (Saarbrücken Castle - also featured in the Location Guide). Visitors can descend the rock-cut sandstone stairs to the underground fortified chambers, formerly in military use. Founded on the castle rock and built of crude masonry, these chambers with vaulted ceilings and embrasures were excavated in 2006 and now serve as subterranean scenery for a multimedia museum exhibit. At different stations throughout the casemates and in the moat, audio installations, accentuated with impressive lighting, inform visitors about the everyday life of people in the Saarland. Reproductions of an arquebus and an artillery piece mounted on a carrier illustrate the military function of the fortification
