Historic Old Town of Ottweiler

the first written mention of the name Ottweiler refers to a castle and dates back to 1393. The town of Ottweiler, however, played only a minor role in the Middle Ages. Only in the 16th century did it receive its town charter and the right to hold markets. Its landmark is a fortification tower - a remnant of the ancient town wall which once surrounded Ottweiler. In 1574, a residential palace was built for Count Albrecht of Nassau-Saarbrücken, marking a highlight in local history. Unfortunately, the château was torn down again in 1753. In the late Middle Ages, while residential houses were strung together one after the other along the town wall, representative buildings were erected around Town Hall Square - the ancient Town Hall itself being one of them. Since Ottweiler is rather situated on the outskirts of an area which was to become an important coal and steel producing region, it has perfectly managed, to this day, to preserve its charming idyllic smalltownscape
