Montclair castle

brief description:

Montclair castle is situated near Mettlach, on a long stretched ridge amidst the so called Saar Bend, where the river meanders through the Saar valley in a horseshoe-shaped loop. The castle was built around 1180 by Arnulf of Walecourt. Following its destruction in 1351 by prince elector Balduin of Trier, it was rebuilt in the thirties of the 15th century under the direction of archbishops Otto and Raban of Trier. As the castle was only inhabited during times of war and siege, it was primarily used as a defensive fortress. It disposes of two small flanking towers and two mighty keeps with magnificent views of the Saar valley. During the course of its restoration in the early 1990s, Montclair castle was subsequently endowed with bridges, footbridges, railings, windows, and grilles to make it accessible for tourism

car:

From, Saarbrücken, take the motorways A620 and A8 in direction to Luxembourg. Exit Merzig-Schwemlingen, then continue with direction to Mettlach. Turn left approx. 1km before Mettlach in direction to St. Gangolf (parking P1)/ Burg Montclair (follow the signs).

parking lot:

sufficient spaces available free of charge, but approx. 4 km away from Montclair castle. Upon prior agreement with Ms. Müller, production vehicles can obtain a special permit to drive up to the castle. Footpath (3,6 km): approx. 45 minutes (younger or athletic persons) or approx. 90 minutes (older persons or persons accompanied by children)

electricity supply:

The voltage is very low because of the long power supply line running from the valley up to the castle. The transformer has a maximum capacity of 25 kW. An additional emergency backup generator can be made available after prior consultation

water supply:

available in the toilet facility and the Turmstube restaurant
