Bliesgau Cycle Path

brief description:

The Bliesgau cycle path is a loop route, leading through the idyllic Bliesgau district. It starts in the baroque city of Blieskastel and runs along abandoned railroad tracks, on flat terrain, away from traffic, through the Blies valley. Toward the end of one of the route‘s extraordinarily attractive parts is the former train station of Gersheim. Today, the building houses a café/bistro/restaurant - the perfect place for a stopover. Next up is the town of Reinheim with its European Culture Park, an archeological park which brings 8000 years of Celtic-Roman history back to life. After a noteworthy incline to the mountain ridge between the Blies and the Mandelbach valleys, the route leads 8 kilometres through a forest (pleasantly cool in summer), passing by the Katharinenhof golf club and Celtic burial mounds, all the way to the Hölschberg hill in the district of Biesingen. This is where the route begins to lead downhill, past the sports ground of Biesingen, past lovely orchards, to the Lange Tal valley, a charming, picturesque landscape. The next 3 kilometres are easy cycling, along the edge of the forest and along paddocks, all the way to Alschbach, on to the town of Lautzkirchen and back to the train station of Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen, the initial starting point of this scenic loop route.
