Briey's Cité Radieuse (radiant city) from 1961 is a remarkable example of contemporary architectural heritage. The modernist residential housing concept was developed by Le Corbusier and has become renowned under the name Unité d'Habitation (housing unit). A number of these building types were called Cités Radieuses and one of them is located amidst a wooded area in the commune of Briey in north-eastern France. With his utopian city living design, Le Corbusier wanted to bring all the comforts of the 20th century to the modern family by using all experimental and technical means available to him in the late 1950s. With its noticeable architectural elements (facade, roof, entrance hall, corridors, apartments), the Cité Radieuse of Briey is a registered landmark building, listed on France's prestigious Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments (ISMH).
